âIT WAS SO NICE to have you kids at church with us this morning,â Charlotte said to Bill and Anna as they settled into a lunch of chicken, asparagus, mashed potatoes, and salad.
âWe knew you could hold out only so long without sharing your grandson with your friends,â Bill teased.
Charlotte grinned. âThey were certainly impressed with our little guy.â
âCan we talk about our grandson after prayer? Iâm hungry,â Bob said.
âI suppose,â Charlotte said.
Bob offered grace, and they passed the serving bowls.
âSure was a good message today on trusting, wasnât it?â Bob plopped a hefty helping of mashed potatoes onto his plate.
âYes. I wished Melody could have heard it, but I didnât see her there,â Charlotte said.
âYeah, I didnât see Ashley either,â Emily joined in.
Bill closed his eyes when he took a bite of the potatoes. âMom, your potatoes canât be beat.â
Anna shot him a frown.
He cleared his throat. âBy anything except Annaâs, of course.â
âOf course,â Charlotte said with a smile.
âYou barely covered your tail on that one, brother,â Pete said with a hearty laugh. Dana nudged him in the side.
Anna turned to Dana. âWhatâs new with the wedding planning?â
Dana exchanged a quick glance with Emily and then said, âItâs coming along.â
âYou havenât chosen the bridal party yet, have you?â Anna asked, her nose hiked a bit.
âWell, no, we havenât. We were discussing recently that we had to get on that. How did you know?â Dana asked sincerely.
âYou havenât mentioned it to Bill.â
Pete stopped eating and stared at her.
âWhat?â Anna asked, hand against her chest. âI assume youâre planning to make your brother the best man. Thatâs what most people do.â
Pete looked clueless.
âWell, Iâm sure Dana and Pete will make their decision on the bridal party in due time,â Charlotte jumped in.
Just then the phone rang, and Charlotte was thankful to be saved by the bell.
âHello?â
âHi, Charlotte. This is Melody. Just wanted to check in with you.â
âOh?â Charlotteâs heart thumped a drum roll.
âIâve decided to go ahead and have a lumpectomy. Once I speak with the doctor tomorrow Iâll find out the surgery schedule. I was wondering if it would be possible to meet at the restaurant tomorrow afternoonâsay, around two oâclock? Iâd like to go over some things with you and just touch base.â
âOh, Melody. Youâve had so much on your plate. Iâd be happy to meet with you anytime and help in any way I can.â
âGreat. Then Iâll see you tomorrow. Oh, and Charlotte?â
âYes?â
âPlease, keep praying.â
A prayer was on Charlotteâs lips before the phone hit the cradle.
